Sea Wolves: Keepers of the Rainforest

K-Gr 2–The sea wolves that live off of western Canada and southeastern Alaska differ from their inland cousins, and they are a remarkable and crucial feature of the food web in the part of the world they call home. While they do eat land meat as other wolves do, sea wolves tend to prefer seafood, and they can swim and scavenge in the waters off the coast to find their desired cuisine. Unfortunately, deforestation and climate change threaten the sea wolves’ survival, and humans must make significant changes in order to protect this important species. Poetically written, this picture book beautifully captures the essence of the sea wolf, especially its place within the Indigenous cultures of the lands where the sea wolf resides. Few words are used on each page, but the phrases that are selected for the narrative elegantly describe the behavior of sea wolves and how they interact and thrive in their natural environment. Rich colors and heart-stirring imagery accompany the text, and the two work together to tell the story of the sea wolf in a way that will resonate with readers. Back matter offers more insight into the sea wolf from both a scientific and a personal perspective.
