Gr 9 Up–This third and final book in the “Anchor and Sophia” trilogy takes place six weeks after the Black Wagon Massacre of book two. The four main characters start off separated, isolated, and not expecting to survive in the long term. Chapters continue to be told from each of their points of view, with every character having a distinct voice and personality. Sophia has officially declared war on the Anchor, with both sides readying for battle. Brothers Clover and Clive are reunited and they realize the importance of family just as the leader of the Descendancy, Chang, has ordered Clive’s public execution. They also discover their father is alive, and no longer believing in the Descendancy. Paz is on the run to prove her innocence in the death of Gemma, fearing that everyone believes her guilty based on past deceits. Athene mourns the loss of her lover Gemma and has the added responsibility of becoming the leader of the Wesah tribe after her mother hands over the mantle. Several of the characters find their beliefs tested, leading them to wonder what will make a better system. There are brief mentions of romantic encounters and relationships. This futuristic dystopian novel is quick paced, with many twists and turns sure to enthrall readers.
VERDICT A gratifying conclusion to this epic tale of self-discovery; a great fit for young adult collections everywhere.
