K-Gr 3–In a series of explosions, surprises, and narrow escapes, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and their friends work together to recover a precious pearl that has been stolen by a band of mutants called the East River Three. Vocabulary-building verbs, such as unleashed, hurled, and swarmed add interest to the action-packed plot, though diffuse used instead of defuse to describe disabling a bomb. The comic-style illustrations are typical of the “Tales of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” series, with vibrant colors and jagged, energetic motion lines. Despite the violence in every scene, the final page asserts that “friendship won the day!” as the turtles and their pals enjoy a celebratory pizza.
VERDICT A fast-paced adventure for confident readers willing to tackle unfamiliar words.
