PreS-Gr 2—Elliot, who lives in America, and Kailish, from India, are pen pals in this engaging story about the commonalities that children from two very different parts of the world share. With beautiful, exuberantly drawn illustrations, author/illustrator Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw cleverly points out that while the children may do things differently, what they do is the same. Both have pets, ride the bus to school, and enjoy learning about their international pen pal. Lighthearted music complements each boy's culture, while narrators Maxwell Glick and Vikas Adam provide appropriate accents and just enough enthusiasm to make this an entertaining experience. Without being didactic, this DVD of the picture book (Holt, 2011) conveys an important message of open-mindedness and tolerance.
VERDICT An important addition to all public library collections.
