Gr 4–7—The first half is an introduction to geology and the processes that form rocks and minerals. This background information is great for readers to know before they start collecting and identifying rocks. The second half is the rock collecting guide, with more than 30 pages of rock and mineral identification, including range maps for some of the most common specimens. There are also great tips for budding rock hounds, such as where to look, what to bring along, and even how to avoid being duped by dyed stones found in many rock shops. The layout is clean and uncluttered, making this small, handy guide easy to read and understand. The many images are clear and attractive, though at times rather small. The back matter includes a glossary, recommended reading, and rock collecting journal pages, but no index.
VERDICT Recommended for libraries serving budding rock hounds or needing a two-for-one introduction to geology and a field guide.
