Gr 2-5–This title features important words to know, the scientists who built the first robots, questions to think about, and hands-on projects that demonstrate ideas presented throughout the book. Some stories about robots and their scientists also include QR codes that link to related videos and keyword prompts to facilitate further research. Van Vleet begins with a comparison between the scientific method and the engineering design process. Each page has plenty of white space and illustrations, making it easy to read. The combination of photographs and cartoonish illustrations adds to the appeal. Many of the projects are low tech and can be done with items found around the house. A few require adult assistance. The projects illustrate concepts about the design process, construction, and power sources.
VERDICT A good supplemental addition to a collection for science projects. Provides solid background for research and will spark ideas for broader science fair experiments.
