PreS-Gr 1–After Riley and his friend begin sneezing at school, Riley becomes fearful of germs. His well-intentioned mother unwittingly compounds his fears by telling him that germs are all around, but invisible! Poor Riley is almost too frightened by the possibilities to fall asleep that night. The characters, who are personified forest animals, discuss concepts and skills for staying healthy, relieving stress, and communicating effectively. Riley and his classmates’ real worries are relieved by the intervention of supportive adults, their parents, teachers, and the kindly doctor. “I’m here,” Dr. Grayfoot announces in a visit to Riley’s classroom, “to talk about how to help you keep both your big feelings and your body healthy.” Andriani’s artwork in solid primary colors, outlined in fine black pen, presents Riley, his mother, and classmates; soft pastel shades fill the background. Geometric shapes of flowerpots, rugs, and chairs provide engaging visual details. Tips are included in the afterword providing worried children with emotional relief, problem-solving practices, and physical techniques for calming the mind and body.
VERDICT Teachers and parents can use this book to lead children in a discussion of healthy practices.
