Rembrandt Chooses a Queen

Gr 2-5–The world of Rembrandt comes alive through the eyes of Samuel, a young Jewish apprentice. Samuel’s artistic desires are at odds with his father’s desire that he focus on his religious studies rather than the “frivolous” nature of art. While preparing for the Jewish holiday of Purim, Samuel finds a way to connect his Jewish faith and family with his desire to make more of an impression on the great Rembrandt. An illustrator’s note explains the use of light and warm colors to represent Rembrandt’s friendship with Jews, explained further in the back matter written by an art professor. Additional back matter explains Purim and the story of Esther. The rich, jewel-toned palette is highlighted by the warmth of yellow light; the recreation of the real Rembrandt painting Ahasuerus and Haman at the Feast of Esther is authentic and engaging.
