K-Gr 3–Young Quincy takes readers to a Latin American festival to try out foods from different cultures. He first gives a geography lesson on Mexico and Central America. At the festival, vendors talk about the food they are serving and tell family stories about how that food was enjoyed back home. Quincy learns about Mexican corn tortillas, Nicaraguan Gallo Pinto (a rice and bean dish), and Guatemalan Champurrados (sesame cookies). Recipes for each are included. This offering is weaker for the lack of space for more recipes and additional related facts from various countries. Some information in the text is repeated in a recipe or in tip boxes; neither Quincy’s comments about how much fun he’s having nor a chef pumping up her audience add to readers’ understanding of Latin American foods and their origins. The cheery illustrations appear to be digitally created caricatures and will appeal to fans of cartoon shows.
VERDICT While readers will find interesting tidbits, they will come away wishing for fewer words and more recipes.
