The brief, lively accounts here are bound to please animal lovers. Gerry describes Lucy, a canine who struggles through her own injuries to get help for her owner following a car accident; Charlie Boy, a German shepherd who assists his owner, a veteran who was blinded in Iraq; and Hooch, a mixed breed with a penchant for skydiving, among others. Numerous asides throughout relate factual material, such as explanations of behavior and details about anatomy.

Real-life stories of dogs who rescue injured or endangered people; perform incredible feats such as reading, surfing, or skydiving; or work as service dogs for disabled children or vets fill this compact volume, illustrated with appealing full-bleed color photos of the dog heroes themselves. Although numerous sidebars clutter the design and detract from the flow, the package overall is a treat for dog-lovers.
