PreS-Gr 1–Saturated colors, thick black outlines, and cartoonish faces bring a vibrant energy to Blake’s uncouth tale. A young white rabbit with an insouciant twinkle responds to every conversation with the words “poo bum,” right up until the moment he gets eaten by a green wolf. The snack doesn’t agree with the wolf and the doctor—little Poo Bum’s father—retrieves the wee pottymouth, who responds to the ordeal by speaking with ornate eloquence, until switching to the word “fart.” Full-bleed spreads in gloriously bright colors are paired with a large, bold font for a visual experience that lends itself to a read-aloud. As a story, the text relies on the peculiar joy of hearing gross words, which won’t appeal to everyone.
VERDICT A slight but lively book, which will delight readers who want to repeat “fart” and “poo” for the rest of the day.
