Gr 5 Up—Yuri and Valentina are part of a race of human beings who have been genetically engineered with superpowers. Setting out to explore space, they crash on Planet Gigantic in Woodmere where they face rock monsters, are imprisoned by a Queen Neva, and meet giant insects and ninjas. There are four fast-paced entries in this collection: "Planetfall," "Trapped!," "Death with a Hundred Legs," and "Apocalypse Neva." Full-color panels bring the action-packed narrative to life. Each of the artists uses a variety of vibrant colors, creating a serene atmosphere, and makes good use of light, with results that are appealing and enjoyable. Each scene has been carefully thought out, and readers will appreciate the intensity of each tableau. The entries also boast backstory vignettes called "Tales from the Planet Gigantic." These shorter stories give the book a legendary feel and will make kids feel as if the setting is more than just a fictional land.
VERDICT Graphic novel fans will enjoy this high-octane compilation of sci-fi comics.
