Baby-Toddler–This whimsical import from Germany is told in toddler Angelica’s first-person voice, accompanied by realistic black-and-white photographs, about her discovery of a piglet wandering down a highway. She and Paulina the piglet establish an instant rapport, and Angelica takes her home. They play together, get muddy together, and Angelica pulls her along behind her in a cardboard box. When the rightful owner arrives to claim his livestock, Angelica sees the writing on the wall and sets off with Paulina to her favorite cave. The family find the pair, and, making a deal with the farmer, keep the piglet, and all is well. It’s a quirky combination of realistic staged photographs from 1969 and the adorable toddler’s inner thoughts.
VERDICT This novelty book may have a life in story hours, but it’s not an essential purchase.
