Over and Under the Wetland

Gr 2-6–Swamps may have a murky reputation, but Messner flips the script, presenting an idealized wetland bursting with possibility. A girl and her grandmother explore the swamp, for as the grandmother says, “down in the swamp is a wild, wet world—a secret kingdom.” Indeed, together they peel back layers to show the incredible diversity in one spot. From the birds overhead to the reptiles underfoot, constant life happens in this space. Neal provides beautifully meticulous plant and animal illustrations. Egret eyes twinkle with alertness, raccoons snuggle serenely, and feasting fish wave in water. Additionally, the swamp’s luscious background vegetation provides space for the dynamic movement in the text. These critters are rustling and swooping through pages. The action helps even young kids discover an exciting new habitat. Meanwhile, for naturalists seeking more, the encyclopedic back matter dives into the animal kingdom more thoroughly.
