PreS-Gr 1–Norman has joined Miss Beak’s play group and is the tiniest and quietest dinosaur there. While all of the other dinosaurs have fun, play with each other, and socialize, Norman becomes embarrassed and hides. He thinks he is the shyest dino in the group until he discovers that one of his classmates, who is the biggest and loudest, can feel shy, too. This thoughtful picture book conceit will help children realize that being shy is nothing to be ashamed of and that others may not be as confident as they appear. Each charming page contains anywhere from one to seven lines of text, and the font is easy to read. When a character shouts or exclaims, the font is bigger and bolder. The watercolor-style illustrations are expressive and friendly; each image is filled with detail, such as the little mouse and purple insect who appear in the background on multiple pages.
VERDICT A generous and engaging title that is highly recommended for class read-alouds and all picture book collections.
