PreS-Gr 1–Thanksgiving dinner is about to begin, and all the animals in the wood are looking for their friend, Turkey. Each in turn encounters Turkey in the wood and issues an invitation to dinner. Turkey’s response is always the same: a simple “No thanks.” Curious what would keep Turkey away from their gathering, the animals all decide to follow and see what Turkey is up to. The forest friends are surprised to find themselves at a turkey gathering: “as far as one could see were turkeys gathered around the table, excited as could be!” The turkeys invite the animals to join them at their table, saying “This meal is for one and all!” and the forest critters accept. With illustrations full of vibrant colors, depth, and texture, this story is likely to appeal to younger readers. Older readers, however, may question the forest friends’ decision to abandon their own meal and follow Turkey, even after he declines their invitations. The culminating message of inclusivity, shown through the invitation to eat at someone else’s table, is one of kindness and acceptance.
VERDICT A secondary purchase; this may make a good addition to a holiday collection that would benefit from a Thanksgiving holiday-themed board book.
