No More Plastic

K-Gr 4–Isley lives near the ocean. One day she awakes to find a dead whale on her beach. Isley is sad then angry when it is announced that the whale died of starvation because it had so much plastic in its stomach. Isley decides to get rid of plastic in her community once and for all. This is a very straightforward book with a clear environmental message about how damaging plastic is to our environment. Isley’s earnest persistence to get rid of plastic is admirable. The language is occasionally wooden, but simple enough for even the youngest readers to understand. The artwork is mixed media collage of recycled materials, which gives the book a very crisp but impersonal feeling. Isley’s determination seems to be without support in her community. Her mom is only mentioned on one page and the rest of the community supports her efforts for a short time but quickly slide back to their old ways of using plastic. The author’s note explains the Prince Edward Island setting (where Anne of Green Gables is set) for this modern redhead’s challenge.
