Gr 3-5–Inspired by the real-life court case of Tina Forbes, this book tells the story of a young Canadian athlete fighting for her right to play in her local junior hockey league. Tina has been waiting for years to turn 10 so she can join an official hockey team. After a small-town move, Tina’s dream is put in jeopardy when her local league doesn’t have a girls’ team and refuses to let her play with the boys. Although the narration isn’t especially fresh and some of the descriptions can feel clichéd, this title provides an age-appropriate introduction to the way sexism has been fought through the courts in the recent past.
VERDICT Sampson shows how Tina deals with discrimination from her peers and adults in a way that will be accessible for young readers. Would be useful as part of a curriculum on women’s rights or as a book report subject for a sports fan.
