K-Gr 2—Neffy, a microraptor, is about to make her first attempt at flight. She quickly crashes to the forest floor. Lillington uses this brief setback, and Neffy's scrambling to catch up with her sisters, to segue into a tour of feathered dinosaurs during the late and early Cretaceous period. Interesting facts about the dinosaurs Neffy encounters are included, along with a classification of identifying features: weight (in kilograms), size (in meters), diet, habitat, family, and era (either late or early Cretaceous period). Information on how to phonetically pronounce many of the complex names is not provided. The front pages have a map of Earth during the Cretaceous period, and the endpapers feature the same map, with the heads of all the dinosaurs named, conveniently placed where they proliferated. Back matter contains a visual lineup—according to size—of all the dinosaurs Neffy comes across and an author's note that explains how it would have been impossible for Neffy to meet all the dinosaurs in the story, as many lived in different times and places in history. This illustrated book is not text heavy and offers a clear presentation of the essential facts, supported by recent scientific discoveries about some lesser-known feathered dinosaurs.
VERDICT This will appeal to your hard-core dinosaur fans and visual learners. Recommended for most collections.
