PreS-Gr 3—Mo Willems's clever rhymes pop in the DVD version of his picture book. Nanette is entrusted for the first time with an important errand. She must get the baguette from the French-speaking baker. However, "The baguette is warm! The baguette smells wonderful," and Nanette devours the crusty bread. Parisian accordion music in a minor key floods the scene. Worried that her mother will be mad, the girl is relieved when Mom hugs her and suggests, "Let's reset," and they go together to buy (and eat) another one. This DVD is as irresistible as a fresh-baked baguette, with the Willems family—Trixie, Mo, and Cher—narrating. Jazzy French music plays in the background, and the energetic animation adds to the comedy of the wordplay. A particularly hilarious bit with a French frog is icing on the cake, and Pigeon sneaks in for his close-up, of course.
VERDICT Early readers will giggle at the rhymes, and everyone will enjoy the humor, especially if viewers speak a little French.
