Gr 1-4–Step inside the mind and eyes of Nala, an African elephant going on her first solo journey to meet an elder. As Nala sets out on her journey, she uses the knowledge she has learned at her mother’s side to navigate a crocodile, nights alone in the caves, humans, and to make her way to wise old Kenu. The prose is very straightforward and the text stands out on the page, making this a good companion to elementary science classes or other animal texts. While a very standard animal journey story, the real joy of the book is the collagelike illustrations that show Nala’s unfolding story and capture her setting perfectly without ever drawing a sand dune.
VERDICT Give this to classrooms studying elephants of young readers who don’t mind a little less dialogue and character building while the journey unfolds.
