PreS–This round board book, shaped like a traditional Seder plate, provides a basic introduction to the foods and rituals associated with the Jewish holiday of Passover. On the first page, the Seder plate is empty, but as each item is presented, an illustration is added to the plate. The name for the symbolic foods appears in large Hebrew text with English transliteration. A simple couplet describes the ritual. “This fruity paste, sweet and tart, like clay of long ago, reminds us of when Moses said, ‘Oh, let my people go!’” and “Leaves of green recall the spring, making things seem new. Everything begins again—Chag Sameach to you!” scan well, for example, while “Jews could not wait for bread to rise as they ran from slavery. We eat flatbread at Passover to know that we are free!” and others aren’t quite as smooth. However, the additional explanations in smaller text are an added bonus. Cheery cartoon illustrations depict a contemporary, multigenerational family celebrating the holiday.
VERDICT A clever addition to the holiday board book collection that will also help the youngest guests follow along during Seder.
