PreS-Gr 4—Alexander is a small boy with a big imagination and the heart of an adventurer. From the moment Daddy wakes him up, saying, "Good morning, Alexander," the boy replies, "My name is not Alexander." Throughout the day, he becomes memorable men from history, including Theodore Roosevelt, Thomas Edison, Chief Joseph, Fred Astaire, Jackie Robinson, and, finally, his own dad. Mike Litwin's colorful mixed-media illustrations depict the spiky-haired Alexander in several different historical contexts. Finally, the boy settles in for an evening of backyard camping with Daddy, the coolest father who ever was. Subtle background sounds such as an alarm clock ringing and potions bubbling in Edison's laboratory nicely complement the storytelling. A bonus segment details the real-life achievements of each of Alexander's heroes.
VERDICT Although it is brief, this production will complement biographical units aimed toward the youngest viewers.
