Gr 4–6—With such a wide variety of books covering religion, it can be daunting to find titles that are accurate and thorough and that still hold readers' attention. Told from the point of view of children explaining their faith to new friends, these accessible and informative titles examine history, practice, and beliefs. While this conceit sometimes feels forced, it helps to introduce the concepts while avoiding a dry, textbook style. Social studies teachers will appreciate that these selections are kid-friendly and that they provide a strong factual overview. Photographs and colorful sidebars help to keep the pages appealing.
VERDICT While these titles may not be among readers' first choices for pleasure reading, they are enlightening and will be useful for curricula on cultural diversity.
