Gr 1–4—This atmospheric treatment of Barbara DaCosta's picture book blends the thrilling adventure of a whale hunt and the sweet reassurance of being tucked into bed by a caring father. The author's note explains that the story is based on Herman Melville's
Moby-Dick, and, in fact, all of the text in the picture book can be found in Melville's novel, except for one word, which viewers are invited to find. The rich, atmospheric soundscape includes splashing waves and the creaking of a wooden ship, and the orchestral music sets an ominous tone. Ed Young's illustrations are enhanced by subtle animation—especially convincing is the movement of the water, from gentle moonlit rocking to rollicking waves. Narrator Elijah Hatcher-Kay infuses the video with drama, while John Holkeboer provides the voice of the father, who sings a sea lullaby to his young sailor at the end. In a DVD extra, DaCosta and Young talk about their collaboration and processes.
VERDICT This video adaptation delivers a winning viewing experience. Highly recommended.
