De Abreu, a global media literacy educator at Sacred Heart University, provides a comprehensive handbook that focuses on the juncture of justice and media literacy. “Young people need to become not only savvy consumers of media, but informed contributors to it as well,” says Yohuru Williams in the foreword. Each chapter contains an essay, a reflection by a contributing scholar, and a suggested lesson idea or plan that can be adapted for a K–12 school, college or university, or community center setting. Among the contributors are school library media specialists, teachers, and higher educators. The book explores subjects like how to deal with controversial topics, misinformation and disinformation, representation and missed representation, civics, omissions, popular culture, health crisis, the digital divide, and finding balance. References are included in each chapter, and there is an index and four appendices.
VERDICT A solid work that offers insight to librarians and educators to help students navigate current media literacy challenges.
