The inviting text and realistic illustrations work together to present the ingredients in order of assembly: plain dough (shown first in a ball and then rolled flat), tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese, green bell peppers, black olives, white mushrooms, fresh basil leaves, and red pepper flakes. Each illustration is paired with a verbal clue hinting at the topping to be revealed with the turn of the page, a format sure to invite audience participation during read-alouds.
