Gr 2–4—In this audiobook, Newman shares three touching accounts of animal rescues. "Runa and Kata: Lucky Leopards" is about two orphaned clouded leopard cubs that almost perish while in the custody of a destitute woodcutter attempting to profit from selling them; "Koa: Turtle in Trouble" features a stranded green sea turtle in extreme distress; and "Crooked Neck: The Lone Loon" tells of a frightened but courageous loon that becomes dangerously snarled in nylon fishing line. At intervals throughout the rescue tales, the author inserts interesting factual information about each animal species, from brief "Did You Know?" asides, such as clouded leopards seeing six times better than humans in the dark, to somewhat more in-depth recitations of key species details and related environmental considerations. Read capably by Johnny Heller, the engrossing stories and noteworthy facts will absorb students and may inspire them to want to learn more about each species as well as about how to rescue animals and create a safer world for them.
VERDICT With the strong interest in animal and environmental topics prevalent in the lower primary school grades, this audiobook will undoubtedly be a popular choice.
