K-Gr 2–A child enters the kitchen and sees their mother crying after reading the newspaper, which is covering news about people being discriminated against, bullied, and hurt due to their identities and beliefs. The child, in their innocence, can’t believe how humans could behave in such a way, and they are filled with sadness. This emotional realization evokes in the child a reminder of good memories, solidarity, and everyday kindness that exists in life. Through bilingual text and colorful illustrations, this work depicts how love works, gives, moves, speaks, welcomes, and sings throughout our daily lives. De laVega’s illustrations showcase myriad physical attributes, community landscapes, and human interactions, where all are interconnected with Doucet’s hopeful and friendly narrative.
VERDICT This lovely offering is recommended where bilingual SEL titles are needed.
