PreS-Gr 1–To Little Bear, almost everything is a treasure. Feathers, buttons, dust—Little Bear doesn’t look for treasure, he just finds them. Not everyone appreciates his efforts, and this makes Little Bear sad. Then he meets Little Bird, who shares his appreciation for many of the same things. They collect treasures until dark and fall asleep together looking up at the stars. This is a slip of a story, but very sweet, about the struggle to remain true to one’s self, and the patience of waiting for a kindred spirit. The magical, dreamy images in grayed pastel hues capture the poetry of the tale without weighing it down.
VERDICT For a pajama storytime, with a subject matter that works nicely when discussing individuality and acceptance, this is a solid additional purchase for most collections.
