Gr 3–7—Zarf is a troll who's stuck at the bottom of the popularity ladder in his middle school. Along with being picked on for his name, which rhymes with barf, and the fact that his family lives under a bridge, he has suddenly developed the inability to control his terrible temper, which he's just discovered is something that happens to trolls when they reach a certain age. When the king disappears, Zarf's classmate and nemesis, Prince Roquefort, assumes leadership of the kingdom. Reluctantly, Zarf and his two awkward friends, Kevin (a nervous and worrisome pig) and Chester (the not-so-funny son of the court jester), set out to rescue the king from a dangerous horde of weasels, and the result is a tale full of humor and adventure. This delightful book launches a new series by graphic novelist Harrell, and is sure to delight young listeners. Graham Halstead does a fantastic job giving a distinctive voice to each character, and bringing added humor and excitement to this enjoyable title.
VERDICT Recommended for all middle grade listeners.
