Gr 1-4–An elephant’s head is so tired of being slow and heavy that it separates from its elephant’s body and rolls away, searching for a new body. The elephant’s head encounters several different animals who give it a trial run, including a frog, a hedgehog, a cheetah, and a whale. As the elephant’s head attempts things it has long dreamed of doing, such as jumping and running, it finds that it is not as easy even with a different body. As the pachyderm joins with the body of a whale and marvels at the wonders of the water, the elephant begins to sink. As the head remembers the many wonderful aspects of being an elephant, such as the caresses of its mother, it finds that it may have been a mistake to wish to have a different body. This Spanish title is perfect for young readers who are about to begin early chapter books. The whimsical descriptions and expressive illustrations make this fantastical story seem very much like a fable, and the poetic text will make this a fun and fast read.
VERDICT Recommended for Spanish-language early chapter book collections.
