PreS-Gr 6—This program comes with two discs, one for ages four to seven and the other for eight to 11. The likable and musically talented host Kyle Dine informs viewers about food allergies through conversation with puppets, songs, and games. Dine defines and identifies common food allergies, how to be mindful of allergens, reasons not to share food, the importance of washing hands after eating foods that may cause another's allergic reaction, symptoms of reactions, the benefits of medical ID bracelets, and medications that counteract reactions. A small group of children dance and accompany Dine with instruments when he sings and plays the guitar. Much of the same material is used in both discs, though the DVD for older children has more content and is slightly longer. In addition to the thumbs-up, thumbs-down quiz on the video, two printed quizzes are included in the package, one for each age group, and more resources are available online.
VERDICT The program for younger students covers important age-appropriate allergy information. The second includes content for more literate students, but the puppet interaction and songs may be too juvenile for fifth and sixth graders. A good purchase for primary grades.
