Gr 9 Up—As Nike's Champion, Gwen Frost has battled Loki's Reapers of Chaos many times, despite still being a student at Mythos Academy. But the stakes have never been higher when the Protectorate discovers an important artifact that the Reapers desperately want; it'll allow them to bring Loki back to full strength so he can lead them into war. The Reapers kidnap Gwen's grandmother, demanding the artifact as ransom, and when it becomes clear that the Protectorate will not negotiate, Gwen takes matters into her own hands. The final book in the series is solidly narrated by Tara Sands. Her believably youthful voice is ideally suited for Gwen, conveying her sarcasm, her determination, and the pressure she feels as the Champion who must ultimately defeat Loki. Sands differentiates between the many characters, varying her pitch and tone to account for differences in gender, age, personality, and, with passable Russian and British accents, nationality.
