K-Gr 2–Animal Shelter Day at the waterpark provides Jeet, his dad, and his dog, Fudge, plenty of opportunities to do good. After running the booth, the three decide to take a short break and try the largest water slide in the park. While waiting in line, they are asked to help find another dog’s lost toy. They graciously step out of line, and Fudge becomes the hero of the moment when he finds the lost object. The trio get back in line, and Jeet begins to worry that they won’t get to the slide before they have to return to the booth. Sure enough, a woman’s dollar bill gets blown away by the wind, and they quickly run to help retrieve it for her. Finally, they get to the front of the line, but then Jeet spies a young boy sobbing because he is out of ride tickets. In a selfless act, Jeet hands the boy their tickets. The ticket taker has watched all of these exchanges and rewards Jeet with a free pass to the front of the line. Kochar cleverly uses questions in the text to directly engage and interest readers; for example, “But wait! Where is Fudge running to?” Digital illustrations are vibrant and will also assist readers in navigating the story. Back matter includes an informative page on volunteering, as well as information on the Sikh religion.
VERDICT This emerging reader shows, rather than explains, the benefits of volunteering and helping others. Recommended for purchase.
