Gr 6–9—This series makes use of primary sources to enhance a general historical overview of a topic. The United States and Canada are tackled, and the books show the two nations' shared history and experiences, with coverage slightly weighted toward the United States. Readers are instructed about many different types of primary sources (called "evidence") and offered examples of how these sources can help piece together the past. Background information and a thorough discussion and analysis of the topics are supported by source quotes and numerous reproductions of photos, cartoons, posters, and many types of documents. Boxed "Evidence Record Cards" document and explain each source, and "Analyze This" questions encourage readers to think about how sources can provide new or conflicting perspectives or change their ideas about the topic.
