Gr 1-4–Jenkins offers a fantastic compendium of bug-related infographics. Facts include population numbers, the largest insects, average life span, and physical appearance, along with a more focused look at some of the different species. The details of most infographics are simple and accessible for nearly all elementary students. Some of the pictorials provide a deep dive with enough information that could be included as secondary resources for research and presentations. Silhouettes of each insect highlight the bug’s size relative to other insects and people. Jenkins’s gorgeous torn-paper illustrations, reminiscent of Eric Carle’s, make browsing through the pages an enjoyable experience. More frightening creatures appear only in small silhouettes, so readers who are squeamish about bugs can still appreciate this title.
VERDICT Jenkins presents a collection of infographics that are easy to read and understand. A must for any elementary science classroom or library.
