Gr 7 Up–Using questions posed to the “In Case You’re Curious” text line, which has been answered by Planned Parenthood staff since 2009, this guide focuses on what young people really want to know about sex. Through a question-and-answer format, the book covers anatomy, puberty, STIs, pregnancy, birth control, relationships, and consent. Varied sexual orientations and gender identities are well represented, and the phrases “people with penises” and “people with vaginas” are used throughout the text instead of boys/men and girls/women. Each answer is written fully as if it might be the only entry that someone reads, but repeated information will reinforce the material. Humor lightens the tone but does not detract from the seriousness of the content. Cartoons accompany each question, ranging from topic-specific illustrations (e.g., images of the vulva) to more random illustrations (for instance, animals).
VERDICT A standout offering on sexuality that all libraries will want to consider.
