K-Gr 3—Emily is a young girl exuberant about the simple things in life. In the first story, she wakes up every morning, excited about getting dressed, and she is especially vocal about how much she loves her thick, curly hair and, by extension, her mother, father, dog, and brother. The animated short will probably be most appealing to young girls, as it encourages positive body image and self-affirmation. It's light on plot and action, which may limit its appeal, but it can still serve to illustrate the importance of self-confidence. The second story demonstrates Emily's love and talent for singing. Even though young viewers likely won't recognize the songs or be familiar with genres such as opera, country, and show tunes, they'll understand the message: that singing is a fun activity.
VERDICT Pair this video with the picture books (Flowerpot) by Anne Matheson for a fun read-along for beginning readers.
