K-Gr 1–Princess Truly helps a friend move, cleans up a park, and helps out at a farm. The text in this book is simple, with short, mostly declarative, sentences that follow a rhyming pattern. There are no more than two sentences per page. For readers new to the series, it will be a surprise when Princess Truly can suddenly fly and make the wind blow because of her magic curls. This is not explained in the story, so readers may want to refer to the picture book,
Princess Truly in I am Truly, that inspired this beginner reader series. Rauscher’s colorful drawings depict Princess Truly with brown skin and twinkly hair puffs, while her friends are less diverse. Young readers will enjoy the simple story with a touch of magic.
VERDICT Nothing new here; purchase where the series and other early readers circulate well.
