PreS-Gr 2–Whimsical text and illustrations introduce the health care “heroes” of Breezy Valley Hospital over the course of an eventful day and night. Alley’s lively cartoons identify each anthropomorphic animal, from anesthesiologist Giraffe to x-ray imagining specialist Crocodile. Nurse Lamb comforts patients on the night shift; certified nursing assistant Wolf rushes to greet ER patients. Graphic panels, maps, diagrams, and cross-sections add plenty of details. For example, a cross-section of an ambulance details its equipment; a map shows the route it takes to reach the hospital. Story threads follow Lemur whose tail injury threatens his role in the upcoming parade, a bear couple expecting their first baby, and the Tabby twins, who need check-ups after they fall off their parade-watching perch. Physical therapy and ongoing care are also mentioned, along with the various ways patients get to the hospital, where “nurses and doctors are always ready to help.”
VERDICT Gentle and reassuring, this introduction to hospital work is thorough and appropriate for young readers. Calling to mind the books of Mercer Mayer and Richard Scarry’s “Busytown” series, this book will have wide appeal.
