PreS-Gr 2–When Finn’s dog and best friend Comet falls sick, he becomes worried. He’s scared about what is happening to Comet at the vet and wondering if he will get better. Finn’s dad explains how he might be scared, but he needs to keep hoping and keep that little light strong. As Finn waits to hear the status of Comet’s health, he begins to understand the importance of a light in the darkness. Averiss and Pelon have created a simple, relatable, and emotional plot to help children learn how to remain bright in dark times. The text is clear, and all the vocabulary is easy to understand, so that even younger children can follow along. The illustrations greatly enhance the story, showing Finn’s emotions by contrasting the dark colors with the bright yellow light of hope. The visual contrast of the good times against the bad times helps to show children exactly what is happening and allows them to relate to or understand the plot.
VERDICT This is a successful picture book that helps young children learn about the world around them and how hope can get anyone through some of the darkest times.
