K-Gr 2–Oliver is a thoughtful child scientist who loves grafting plants that can help his neighbors solve their problems. For example, Oliver creates a plant that can protect the postman from inclement weather and another that can do housework for his neighbor with back problems. But when Mrs. Kroftombottom presents with having
black-thumbitis none of his plant solutions seem to do the trick. Just when he thinks there is no cure, a glass of milk and a walk through Mrs.Kroftombottom’s home gives him an idea that just might work! Wicker’s writing flows with ease and pairs seamlessly with her digitally rendered illustrations of a devoted and cherub-faced scientist. Oliver’s plant creations will encourage readers to think of their own varieties of helpful plants along with fun Latin-inspired scientific names.
VERDICT An enjoyable story centering a dedicated child scientist who comes to know what is most needed for plants and people to grow and thrive.
