Gr 1-2–This nonfiction board book follows a small child through their day in a Greek city from morning to evening, introducing readers to Greek phrases and words along the way. Breakfast with grandma is followed by a trip to the park with mom, an afternoon nap, shopping at the market, and an evening meal with family at home. The day ends with story time with grandma and her dog, and then getting tucked into bed. Tikkou’s bold sketches pop with playful movement and convey traveling through the city from a child’s perspective. Greek vocabulary is introduced on each page accompanied by phonetic pronunciations. The text reads more like the cheerful, disjointed announcements of a child, and less like a narrative story with a beginning and end. It is not always clear what the specific English word or phrase on the page is that readers are meant to be learning, or what the definition of it is, so the glossary at the end of the book is necessary and will be referred to often.
