PreS-Gr 2–This book is all about different types of boats, and they are illustrated in many sizes, colors and shapes. The repetition of the word “boats” adds a soothing balance to the text. Boats can be seen serving different functions. The illustrations are drawn in a folk art style, and bright colors add a joyful feel to this story. Readers could easily notice something new and unique happening on the page every time they view the images. Lines are often used to depict the different flows of water; fast-moving water is represented with curvy lines, while water with a more static flow is illustrated with straighter lines. The viewpoint of scenery shifts often throughout this story, and the text in this book often appears to trail alongside different boats. Animals also make playful appearances throughout.
VERDICT This book is a great way to introduce young children to the many functions and uses of boats.
