Giant Rays of Hope: Protecting Manta Rays to Safeguard the Sea

Lerner/Millbrook. Oct. 2024. 56p.
Gr 4-8–Pollution, climate change, and overfishing threaten the lives of giant manta rays. In an effort to encourage fishers in her native Perú to help protect the species, scientist Kerstin Forsberg created her nonprofit, Planeta Océano. Forsberg’s desire to share her love of the natural world began at a young age, and she went on to study biology in college and complete an internship at a sea turtle conservation program. After helping recover a lost manta ray tag, her interest turned to that unique species. She established Planeta Océano and set out to accomplish her goals. She started by reaching out to schools to build curriculum around ocean science. As the program grew, she took advantage of opportunities to reach out to local fishers to hear about their problems and concerns related to fishing and the dangers of bycatch. The stories included in the book aren’t just from Forsberg, but also from the children and families that have joined her in her mission. Sidebars provide additional information about the different animal species and individuals involved in Planeta Océano’s work. Relevant photographs break up the text into manageable pieces, making for an enthralling and informative read. Back matter includes a time line, an author’s note, a note from Forsberg, acknowledgments, glossary, source notes, and selected bibliography. Recommended additional sources are included.
VERDICT A fascinating and important tale of one scientist’s dedication to ocean conservation and community that will inspire many to follow in her footsteps.
