Gr 1–5—Readers are first introduced to a vibrant, independent Grandpa when Faye spends the night at his home. Tragically, Grandpa suffers a stroke the next day following his shave, a morning ritual that Faye always enjoys. Grandpa spends several months in the hospital and then living with Faye's family while he recuperates. The story ends with Faye and Grandpa beginning to establish their old routine, as she helps Grandpa once again with a morning shave. Watercolor and pencil illustrations are rendered in muted tones, using interesting perspectives and touch of surreal imagery. This realistic portrayal of a family's love and support while facing a loved one's illness gently explains what a stroke is and what steps follow during the healing process.—
