Gr 7 Up—Sixteen-year-old sheriff's son Daniel Byers is not sure if he is normal. He sees things that others can't and wonders how much of what he is seeing is true. Timber wolves are protected in his town, but recently someone has started poaching them. When Daniel's father disappears, Daniel attempts to solve several mysteries at once. The adventure takes listeners to a mental hospital, a mysterious island, and a haunted lighthouse. Daniel has many close calls with death, but miraculously, he survives and is able to rescue his dad and solve a mysterious death from long ago. Nick Podehl is an excellent narrator. His voice is captivating and easy to listen to. Podehl skillfully distinguishes voices, including males and females of different ages. Pacing is important to the tension in this thriller, and Podehl excellently expresses the tension in his tone.
