PreS-Gr 1–These sweet, amusing titles introduce youngsters to seasonal animals and plants. In
Frog’s Summer Journey, a little frog decides to move to the other side of his pond. He is helped by Fish, who nibbles the stem of his lily pad so he can float across. But just as Frog gets comfortable in his new location, a duck and a goose arguing over a bit of pondweed cause Frog to fall into the water. He tries to find a new home.
Rabbit’s Spring Gift features two siblings competing to find the perfect gift for their hardworking mother. Sister’s delicate white flower, juicy radish, and white feather pale next to her brother’s giant yellow blossom, cauliflower, and peacock plume. Their insightful mother assures the siblings, “You are the best gifts of all!” Both entries feature flat, brightly colored illustrations with a variety of full spreads, panels, and thumbnails that reflect the action and humor, reminiscent of the “Little Golden Books” series. They also contain activities (paper flowers, rose petal perfume, and window gardens) and a page detailing signs of the season.
VERDICT Seasonal, predictable fun for children.
