Gr 3-6–A middle grade graphic novel featuring a group of time-traveling outcasts on their adventures through time. Frida Mcmoon loves history and science and is often made fun of because of it. Hiding from bullies at the Museum of History, she gets stuck in the building overnight. She discovers that kids from different time periods come alive at night. They are intern “crononauts” responsible for searching through the museum’s exhibits to make sure time pirates haven’t altered historical events. The group includes a girl samurai, medieval witch, young Roman emperor, prehistoric tween, and hunter from the Wopanga tribe, which seems to be a fictional indigenous tribe. The friends travel to prehistoric times in pursuit of thieves stealing extinct creatures for the highest bidder. The humorous text, silly antics, sci-fi themes, and likable characters make this a fun option for graphic novel novices and experts alike. Middle graders will identify with the crew of misfits. The dynamic panels and bright-colored art reminiscent of Lorena Alvarez Gómez’s make this offering beautiful to look at. There is a mention of bicho, which means bug in many Spanish-speaking countries but also refers to a part of male anatomy not meant for children’s books.
VERDICT Despite some hiccups, this is a nice choice for Spanish-language collections, especially those in need of graphic novels.
